You gotta love Newsome-Harlow. The single vineyard Zins are to die for. Today though…I decided to pop and pour their Syrah offering from 2015.
This Zin comes from the Dalton Ranch Vineyard in San Andreas, CA.
Per the winery, here are the details:
Grapes: 100% Syrah
Alcohol: 14.9%
Vineyard(s): Dalton Vineyards
Aging: 24 months is 25% new french oak and 75% neutral oak
Dark and scary in the glass is how it starts out when you pour. Flavor started out tight and took a couple hours to open up. Once it opened up it was beautiful on the nose.
Black Cherry and Blackberries just pour out of it with a hint of cream. Fresh and fruit-forward smelling. Definitely get a little oak on the nose as well. Good vanilla and toasted scents.
On the palate you get lots of blackberry fruit up front. A good dose of medium acidity and a little oak spice on the mid-palate. The alcohol is slightly high, but not crazy.
Medium-heavy in weight. Like drinking whole milk. Spicy on the finish with lingering black cherry and spicy oak notes. A little rhone spices basket as well. Overall, a good bottle of juice that could probably stick around in the cellar for 4-5 years.
I give this wine a 4/5.
Try it if you can find it. Definitely worth pursuing and trying, especially for Murphy’s Syrah.
